Statewide, 3.4 percent of children under 18 have no working parent, well below the national rate of 5.5 percent. (Data are not available for younger age groupings.) Unemployment is associated with stress, anxiety, and depression, which can lead to an increase in family stress and contribute to negative outcomes for children, including low birth weight, child abuse, low academic achievement, and behavior problems.
