Attending class is foundational for high school students to remain on track with their studies and progress toward graduation. Ninth grade is a transitional year for many students, as they learn to navigate the high school environment and face more challenging coursework. It is also a critical year for students to exhibit good attendance, as research has shown that poor attendance in ninth grade is correlated with an increased risk of dropping out of school or failing to graduate on time. Poor attendance may indicate a school environment that students or families perceive is not welcoming, disengagement on the part of students, or personal challenges such as illness or homelessness that interfere with attendance.
