Transportation expenses
Transportation expenses can have a big impact on a family budget. Because of this, transportation costs often play a role in decisions on where to live, where to work, and what mode of transportation an individual chooses to get around. For some families, high transportation costs put a constraint on employment choices and limit travel. High transportation costs can also constrain business. These costs are often passed on to consumers in the form of increased prices. Because of transportation's costs to individuals, businesses and the environment, it is important for our region to have an efficient, affordable system that maximizes individual choice. Transportation expenses as a share of average household income is one way to measure our current system's affordability.
