Good mental health is as important as good physical health. Mental illness can impair people's ability to work, to raise their families, and to participate in civic life. Serious mental illness can lead a person to harm themselves and/or others. In addition to affecting individuals and their families, mental illness imposes significant economic costs on employers, government, health care systems, and the general public. Admission to a hospital for mental health reasons is an indicator of a collective failure to diagnose or treat mental health problems early on.
