Transportation expenses can have a big impact on a household budget and often play a significant role in decisions on where to work and live. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Location Affordability Index estimates the average cost of transportation, as well as the closely related cost of housing, for households at different sizes and income levels. Over time, this measure tracks whether transportation is becoming more or less affordable, as well as the extent to which any potential savings in transportation come at the expense of increased housing costs.
